Conan’s Honest iPad 2 Promotional Video

As I’m sure the majority of my readers are already aware, last week the iPad 2 was announced with a flourish only reserved for Apple’s cult products.

Despite the not-too-impressive advances from the original iPad (to me, thinning the profile and slapping two mediocre cameras to the device do not warrant a significant upgrade), thousands of iPad owners are already ditching the old iPads for the newer models.

Apparently, I wasn’t the only one underwhelmed by the upgrade. Conan O’Brien aired a mock promo of the iPad 2 on his show last night, alongside the headline “iPad 2. You’ll buy it no matter what we say.” Take a look at the clip below — I couldn’t help but let out a chuckle at the smooth talker with “a non-specific ethnic accent.”

That being said, there’s a very good chance that we will be adding an iPad 2 to our household. Although I have no need for the device, J could use having a portable computer that is (1)not falling apart and (2)not his work laptop.

He is sure that Claire will get a kick out of it too, as she already stares with fascination at his touchscreen phone. I have heard that there are many baby-friendly apps available for the iPad which we will be tempted to download for our progeny. However, I am hesitant to let a (drooling, clumsy) baby play with such an expensive device.

How about you? Do you have an iPad, and if so, are you planning to upgrade?

Would you let your baby play with an iPad?

  1. Donna:

Wanna hear something nuts? My cousin just bought her two year son his OWN ipad for Christmas….

  2. Sarah:

I know you’re both Android users — why not try the Motorola Xoom? My husband just got it for exactly the reasons J could use one. He’s in love.

And now I’m laughing at myself, because I’m not really sure why I felt the need to promote it here.

  3. I got an iPad for Christmas and my 22 month old uses it WAY more than me. He LOVES it and I really feel like he learns a lot. 20 months is about as early as I would trust him with it. We also got the most intense case on the market to keep it safe from his clumsy hands.

  4. I don’t even have an iPad 1, so I’m definitely not upgrading to the iPad 2 (yet!). That Conan clip is hilarious!

  5. I don’t know an iPad but will probably get the iPad2 because it just makes sense when I go into client meetings and what not. It’s easy to showcase work / mockups rather than with a laptop (which is what I’ve been doing) Laptop, turn, show, turn, laptop, turn, show… it’s just awkward.

I’m sure Mavi will use my iPad… heard there are great learning tools available.

    • I think getting an iPad to use at client meetings is a great idea! A photographer whose blog I follow (I forgot which one) once wrote that ever since he started using an iPad at potential client meetings, he started booking more gigs, and that the iPad has paid for itself over and over again. I hope you get the same results!

My son is 3 months old and I downloaded various apps for him. I like to do the flash cards. I keep the screen pretty far from his face and I only do the flash cards for about 10 mins a day. He’ll use it more as he gets older. I also let my 3 month old watch tv. He watches sportscenter with his dad and he watches the “My baby can read!” DVD twice a day (they’re only about 20 minutes long).

  7. Are you kidding? We got our ipad FOR the baby!

OK, not quite. Husband uses it most, and loves it because it’s so much lighter — both more portable and more couch-surf-able than his laptop. (I have an Air, so find I’d rather have the functionality of my whole computer and keyboard.) But the baby really does love it, for endlessly viewing photos of herself (man, babies/toddlers are egomaniacs) and for the toddler apps. And Angry Birds, of course.
