The Science of Toilet Paper Orientation

The good people of Engineering Degree have tackled one of the most pressing issues of our time: should toilet paper hang over or under?

Check out the infographic below for a scientific approach to toilet paper orientation. For instance, did you know that how you prefer your toilet paper may determine your personality? And that I am among the 20% of people who have flipped a roll around when it was facing (what we believe to be) the wrong direction?

Frankly, all this data makes my head spin a little — especially the formulas…physics was my worst subject at school — and almost has me longing for three seashells instead. (Three points for anyone who can guess what movie I’m referencing!)

P.S. — According to commenter Peter, toilet paper should always hang over for sanitary reasons.

Demolition Man! :) I’m a firm believer and proud member of the over toilet paper movement. It really bothers me when people have it the “wrong” way! Depending on who the offender is, I’ve been known to switch it to the right way. Especially at my sister-in-law’s house because she puts it under and it drives her crazy when she realizes someone has changed it. It’s serious business! :)

  3. I used to be an over person … but i noticed that when the TP is under, you almost never have to search for the end. When it’s over, I’ve noticed that you can spin and spin and still miss the TP end.

LOL! omg this is hilarious. Daniel is SOOOO crazy about it being “over”! I totally have to make sure it’s always facing up!!

  5. This is hilarious!! I am an “over” & will change the roll if it’s “under”, even at other peoples homes!
