It’s a…

Girl!

…but we’re not certain.

BebeDeux was moving around so much that the doc had a hard time getting a good look at the goods. He thinks it’s a girl, but he says he wouldn’t bet on it.

We’ll just have to wait until the 14th to find out for sure. (Sigh.)

I know that the gender is still not definite, but I wouldn’t be lying if I said I was initially upset. (I have always wanted two boys.) J was a teeny bit disappointed too, but only because he says I had built up the expectation.

Now that we’ve had some time to let the news sink in, we’re feeling a lot better about it. We already have a great girl name picked out but were still undecided on a boy name. My mother tells me that having a little sister would be easier for Claire and that they will become very close.

There’s also the theory that attractive people are more likely to have girls than boys, which J — ever the humble one — likes to boast about and exclaim with a woeful sigh, “It’s inevitable that I will only have girls!”   We all know that the real reason he’s more likely to give me XX sperm is due to the fact that he’s a software engineer and works with computers all day long (apparently, XY sperm tend to die off in such environments).

As I have discussed previously, if BebeDeux does turn out to be a girl, we will be trying for a third baby within the next few years.

Now, please excuse me while I go feed the beast (aka my pregnant self).

Congrats! Honestly, I think I’d be initially disappointed, too, if my baby #2 whenever that happens was another girl. I’ve always wanted one boy and one girl. But, as my husband is also a software engineer, we’ll probably end up with two girls, haha!

Two girls so close in age just sounds so sweet – I can just see them playing together and becoming best friends. Can’t wait to hear the confirmation! :)

Two little girls sounds sweet! :) Congrats

Congrats, Jenny! I’m sure if you’re meant to have to two girls (and a third down the line) that they’ll be loved and spoiled just the same. :)

Love the new blog layout too, by the way.

Wow, it’s really interesting how being a software engineer can affect gender – guess we’re in for all girls too.

For your part I hope that they are wrong though :)

I’m curious, how does being a software engineer adversely affect the longevity of XY sperm? I was not able to find an explanation for it. Thanks.

Longer exposure to computers (laptops, in particular) leads to lower sperm count, and since XY sperm are “weaker” in general, they’re more likely to die out before XX sperm.

Most of the “well known” differences between XX and XY sperm are from studies done 40 years ago and a lot more has been learned, showing that while the ideas are not necessarily wrong, there is a lack of proof for them. Below is a link I read when I was doing research, most of the actual scientific articles you probably wont have access too, but the poster does a pretty good job of describing the results. While I havent looked through all of their links, the ones i have looked at were pretty interesting

        http://genderdreaming.com/forum/showthread.php?1562-What-are-the-REAL-differences-between-X-sperm-and-Y-sperm

just thought you might be interested…for the majority of the results are actually scientists have no clue :)

I knew it! people say that if your older child looks like a girl, your next baby is a girl and vise versa. and claire makes a beautiful little girl. at the ripe age of 22 months, my son still gets mistaken as a girl. while people always ask why am i dressing my younger child in pink when “he” is a boy… HELLO!!!! SHE’S a GIRL!

congrats! you’re going to have a beautiful family whether this baby is a boy or a girl. enjoy as much as you can cause once this little pops out….. all hell will break lose! hehe

Congrats! How exciting to finally know! And as someone with a sister and no brothers I can wholeheartedly say that your two girls will loving being sisters!

I’m happy that you might be having a girl. I’m pregnant myself with an 8month old daughter, I’m hoping that my second BB will be a girl. Off course, my husband is hoping that this BB will be a boy, but we won’t find out anytime soon. Congrats!

Congrats!!! Claire is absolutely adorable so I know your next will be too! :)

    Congratulations :)

I LOVE having a sister, so just know that. If I had a boy and a girl, I’d probably be sad that my girl doesn’t have a sister. So, I think it’s a good thing. :)

Congrats!!! I guessed GIRL in your poll :)

My 1st is a girl, and I would LOVE for my 2nd to be a girl too. Of course I’m slightly biased since I grew up in a family of 2 girls and my sister and I are sooo close. I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have her to confide in all the time. I have a great relationship with my mom too, and I guess I’m hoping I’ll have a good mother-daughter relationship with my children in the future. :)

As much as my husband loves our lil’ girl, he is rooting for our next one to be a boy! I guess he wants his chance to have “father-son” bonding too.

Congratulations! I have this vision of you with two girls! Don’t ask me why? Either way, what a blessing!

On an unrelated note, thank you so much for your kind words on my post the other day. I was really touched. xo

The bio tutor in me needs to correct you – the sperm is only X or Y (not XX or XY). Your egg supplies the other X. :P

    • Geek in Heels June 4, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Yeah, I’ve always been horrible at science. Thanks for the correction.

  • Michelle Simpson June 7, 2011 at 8:25 pm

Congrats :) Hopefully your next appointment makes it clear!

Well, gender isn’t determined by sex organs. Your child will tell you who they are as they get older. :)
