I wondered the same thing. Just did a quick Google search, it seems like Vday cards started being mass produced in the 1840s- and apparently the Victorians were into Vday.

oh geez, apparently his mother died less than 12 hours earlier the same day and his daughter was born just two days earlier! how sad!
