They Will Not Take No for an Answer

Remember how earlier this year, we canceled cable in addition to our land line?

Since then, our cable company has been trying its darndest to win back our subscriptions.

When we first moved into our home, we had signed up for their Triple Play package, which included cable, internet, and phone for about $100/month for the first year.

After the first year was up, our bill went up to about $160/month, which we had continued to pay faithfully until we canceled cable and phone.

Now, we are paying about $50/month for just the high-speed internet.

The first few months after we had canceled cable and phone, we regularly received notices that they would reinstate the $100/month promotional price for a year.

Four months ago, that price went down to $90/month for a year.

Three months ago: $80/month for a year.

Two months ago: $70/month for a year.

Last month: $70/month for two years.

And this month?

A snapshot of the flyer we received in the mail…after Claire got to it

In case you can’t make out what it says (you probably can’t, as it was taken with my crappy phone camera): $70/month for two years, plus a free DVR rental for a year, plus a free iPod Touch!

8-O

Now, I have no idea if the iPod Touch is an older model, but seeing as the lowest-end iPod Touch currently retails for $229, I’m pretty tempted.

Nevermind the fact that we would only be paying $20 more (or $30 after taxes) a month for two additional services.

And as much as I love our cable-free life, there are some shows whose networks have not caught up to the 21st century and do not air full episodes online. Yes, I am sorely missing my guilty pleasure, aka the only reality show I enjoy: Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

What do you think? Should we go for it?

Should we wait until next month and see what else they would offer? :-P

P.S. — Stay tuned for a giveaway tomorrow!

I’m jealous! I cancelled my cable a year ago and haven’t seen anything from the cable company worth my time. I’d totally do it. I miss having Discovery, TLC, Nickelodeon, etc. but it’s just not worth it for me to have a $100+/mo cable bill for them.

  2. Ha! Love it. I don’t trust cable companies rates. They used to raise mine every six months, so every six months I would call and threaten to cancel in order to get them to lower my rates. I would call and ask what model of iPod Touch and if it’s legit, I might go for it. :)

  3. Is you cable company Comcast? If yes, don’t do it… they are evil! (ok not evil but close).

I agree they are persistant. We also went cable/satellite free 2 years ago. When we canceled they called us to find out why and they wanted to know who we were now getting service from. When we responded “Nobody, we don’t have Cable or Satellite” it would not compute- “what, wait, you don’t have TV?” the poor polling guy said. “I don’t have a box to check for that.” He must’ve checked that we got satellite or something because we got 3 more calls trying to lure us away from the “other company” all of the customer service people were equally confused by our choice to not have television service.

And to think that I was patting myself on the back for getting them to reinstate the promotional price (100 shekels) every time they raised it. Good things really do come to those who wait!

  5. We got the same offer too! I am so tempted since we have Direct TV right now and it costs $100 a month just for that! We have iPhones so we don’t need an iPod Touch but still, it’s free! I’m not sure what we’ll do…

  6. I would totally do it. We get free cable… I’m not sure how. But we bought our first tv, plugged it into the wall to see if we got local channels, and voila! Cable! We do pay $50/month for internet, though. We also use Optimum and they call ALL TH TIME trying to get us to sign up for cable. I always lie and say we don’t watch/have tv. I’m obviously a bad person.

  7. Jenny, I don’t know what your thoughts are on pirating, but I’m just going to leave this here…

    • Thanks for the suggestion…but I remember checking SideReel for that show and it only linked back to iTunes. I just checked again and it doesn’t look like anything’s changed (unless I’m missing something?)

I used to download shows I couldn’t watch online on BitTorrent, but my ISP’s been really cracking down on BitTorrent users so I haven’t in a while. :-(

  8. It makes me feel better when other intelligent people I know watch “trashy” reality tv.. I myself am a Millionaire Matchmaker and Jersey Shore fan… I finally gave in and just admitted it, I like trashy tv sometimes! I say research the promo and if its legit, go for it!

  9. Ahh we have optimum internet too and they call ALL THE TIME trying to get us to do the triple play. But they haven’t offered a lower price than 100 yet. I’d do it for cable if it was only 20 more or so, but otherwise it is such a money suck for a few shows.

  10. I guess the question becomes more do you NEED cable television and a landphone? Cause if not, at the end, you’re still paying $20 extra a month for services you don’t need.
