So This is What They Look Like on the Inside…

Yesterday, we discovered 2 new teeth in Claire’s mouth — one on either side of her top front teeth — making for a grand total of 6 teeth at the age of 12 months.

(So far, all of her teeth have come in pairs. Is this normal?)

The best part? She did not exhibit any signs of teething prior to our discovering these new pearly whites. If you can recall, the first four were hellish: waking up 5-6x per night, constant whining and crying, extreme clinginess, and so forth.

We’re keeping our fingers crossed that this will be the norm for the rest of her teeth!

And, to celebrate, I will share with you a picture of a child’s skull before losing their baby teeth:

Completely horrifying yet strangely fascinating at the same time, wouldn’t you say?  :-D

It’s completely normal for them to come out in pairs. The first four usually hurt/bother the kiddos a lot as they aren’t used to teething, and the central incisors are SLIGHTLY bigger than the ones that just erupted now (the lateral incisors). The bottom ones should pop out soon as well.

Unfortunately, the next few pairs (molars) will probably bother her again, as the teeth are much larger and further in the back. Usual rule of thumb is that in every 4 months, 4 teeth should be appearing.

I’m a dentist btw, not specialized in peds but do see a lot of peds! A helpful chart in case you are wondering when/which one will be next: http://www.ada.org/sections/publicResources/pdfs/chart_eruption_primary.pdf

WOW. That photo is grotesque. I’m frightened just looking at it.

Meanwhile, if you ever DO have problems teething again (my 3 y.o just had a fit with some back teeth) try Hyland’s teething tablets (http://www.hylands.com/products/teething.php) They are MIRACULOUS and homeopathic/natural. I swear by them…..

Thanks for the rec! Unfortunately, we’ve tried Hyland’s and it didn’t seem to do anything for Claire. At one point, she was teething so badly that it seemed the only thing we hadn’t tried is to dose her with narcotics!

That skull is unbelievably grotesque! I will never look at a child the same again.
