Stately Sandwiches

Here’s one for all the foodies — as well as those who have deep connections to their home states.

The Stately Sandwiches Project, started by design student Kelly Pratt, seeks to choose a sandwich that represents each of the 50 states.

It will be quite a delicious journey across the US. Before I make each sandwich I do research on the Internet, call local sandwich shops, ask foodies on twitter and check out a few books to be sure I do my best to properly represent a state.

So far, the project is only 12 states in, but Ms. Pratt has done a beautiful job of choosing, deconstructing, and photographing each sandwich on the list. Check them out below!

California: Powerhouse

Connecticut: Chicken Parmigiana

Illinois: Italian Beef

Kentucky: Hot Brown

Louisiana: Muffaletta

Massachusetts: Fluffernutter

Minnesota: Fried Walleye

New York: Reuben

North Carolina: Pulled Pork

Pennsylvania Cheesesteak

Texas: Brisket

Virginia: Ham Biscuit
 

Being from New York, I believed the reuben was a very appropriate choice, and I couldn’t help but wonder what type of sandwich will end up representing my current home state of New Jersey. Perhaps some type of hoagie?

  1. I was wondering what Texas would be, and then as soon as I saw “brisket” I was like, Duh of course!

    I currently live in California, but I am originally from Seattle and still consider myself a Seattleite. For Washington State, I can’t think of anything more fitting than a sandwich featuring some kind of salmon. Maybe cedar-plank grilled salmon. Or salmon smoked over coffee grounds.

    Having lived in California for 11+ years I can’t say I have ever had that sandwich. Seems like a lazy choice. Sandwiches just aren’t huge around here in general though. I think they should have made it a taco for California, it would have been a lot more appropriate.

    New York is good though.

    Maryland has got to be a Softshell crab sandwich I assume?

    NJ doesn’t eat hoagies =P well, if you’re in south jersey maybe. But NJ’s sandwich would have to be a pork roll (taylor ham), egg, and cheese!

  7. Mmm brisket is the perfect choice for Texas! My mouth started watering a bit when I saw that photo, haha!

    I think that the California one is accurate, especially the avocado. Yum!

    The Kentucky Hot Brown was 100% the correct choice. It doesn’t look as appetizing disassembled and cold, but they are delicious and originate in Louisville, KY. It’s a dish you can find all over the state in restaurants ranging from Mom and Pop venues to 4 star restaurants.

    It’s not as common as the Hot Brown though, so I think the design student was correct in choosing the Hot Brown!

    As a native Minnesotan, I’m totally okay with the fried walleye sandwich! I love walleye in any preparation, really, and it seems quite fitting. :) And now I want one!

  11. I’m from New Jersey too. I’d be okay with either the hoagie or the Taylor ham. They’re both good.
