The Human Mind Can Be a Disgusting Place

One of the most memorable novels I have ever read is American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis. (And in case you weren’t aware, yes the movie is based on the book.) While the book is meant as a satire of 1980s American materialism, greed, and superficiality, the reader cannot help but be horrified — and transfixed! — by the narrator’s description of his murders and the thought process that goes behind them.

It’s actually a great read for those who do not easily get queasy, or can appreciate genius in its various forms.

When I read the book for the very first time back in my early twenties, I remember thinking that the author must have one sick mind to even IMAGINE these scenarios and thoughts.

I also remember feeling relieved; I felt fortunate that I had not yet in my short life come across anyone with disturbing thoughts such as these.

But the more I think about it, how would I know?

Does anyone really know what’s truly going on in the heads of their neighbors, coworkers, acquaintances…even their friends and relatives?

The answer is that we don’t.

And I couldn’t help but be reminded of this as I read a highly appalling story on Reddit yesterday.

The following is a screenshot of the original story that was found in a post somewhere in the deep web. It may be a bit difficult to read as it is in image format, but I highly doubt that anyone would want to re-type this story as it is CREEPY as hell.

Warning: the story below is extremely graphic and disturbing!!!

Do you now want to go wash your eyes out with Clorox? Do you want to go sob in a fetal position under a shower? Are you now haunted by images of these “dolls”?

While there is a very good chance that the story is fake (see: “urinary track” vs “urinary tract”), it can still be very disturbing to think that someone has imagined this tale and most likely ENJOYED writing it.

And I thought The Human Centipede was bad.

  1. Given what you’ve said, I’m NOT going to read it! I don’t want it in my brain!

I do wonder about sick minds like you do. I’ve read some mystery novels that made me curious as to how the author could think of such horrible crimes.

  2. Read the story. Wasn’t horribly surprised, given the fact that humanity has been like this since the dawn of time and has done ridiculously cruel things to women and children. A lot of people seem to think this is a relatively new phenomenon, but things like that story seem to pop up in historical literature quite often. Obviously not to that extent, I’m guessing that was some sort of erotic fiction. It just makes me sad. Sad that people don’t value life. Sad that victims don’t get to have the happy life I feel I have. Sad that someone would take pleasure in the fantasy (or reality) of hurting little girls. You’re right, the human mind can be a very, very sick place.

  3. Wow – so sad and disturbing. I agree with you that it’s most likely fake, but still appalling that someone could imagine something like that.

  4. I pretty much cannot handle this stuff. I saw American Psycho a few years ago and even though Christian Bale was kick ass as Batman, I shudder a bit every time I see him in a movie. I’ve never quite gotten over how completely sick he was in American Psycho. I would never, ever read the book. A few months ago, when the Human Centipede 2 came out, I was curious about the hype so I Googled it. I couldn’t even handle what I read on Wikipedia! I was freaked out for a while. Its crazy how the human mind can be so beautiful and innovative but also unbelievably horrific. Kudos to whoever can handle this stuff.

    • Nice. I caught it Friday and was soehkcd by two things: 1. How tame the movie was considering its premise (possibly the least offensive movie about sewing mouths to assholes theoretically possible). 2. How much friendlier the crowd seeing the film was than over at William’s bar beforehand. (Never let anyone tell you that horror films breed a violent society.)Also, the Uptown’s digital projector lens could use a cleaning.

  5. Zoe:

UGH, maybe I watch too much SVU so I already know humans are depraved in that sense, but the Wiki summary for The Human Centipede is REALLY giving me the creeps.
