3 Things That Make Me Feel Like an Asshole

Sometimes, it’s really, really tiring being three people’s favorite person.

Oh noes! You’re so loved! Barf.

I know. I need to get over myself.

I’m so sick of being my parents’ translator (I have been so since before I turned 10). Phone calls, meetings, letters…managing your own adult life can be tough in itself, but helping to manage my parents’ on top of mine and my children’s has been especially burdensome lately.

You have parents who are alive and well, who love and support you. Helping them with this stuff should be nothing compared to what they have done for you.

Yes, and that’s why I feel like an asshole.

The girls are napping and I know that I should tidy up and vacuum, but I can’t stop staring at these animated GIFs of bouncing Jell-O. And it feels good to be sitting on my butt, wasting time.

Okay, maybe I’ll give myself this one.

If it makes you feel better, I can completely relate to numbers 1 and 3 (1. because children are needy as hell and husbands sometimes aren’t much better, and 3, because who wouldn’t want to sit on their butt watching Jell-O bounce rather than vacuum??). As for 2, I’ve never experienced it, but even as someone who just lost a parent, I completely understand that dealing with parents and whatever their issues are can be really draining… it doesn’t take away from the gratitude and love, but dang, sometimes you just want to not deal with it anymore. So if you’re an asshole, I guess I am too. 🙂

Amen on number 1. I teach high schoolers, who are UNBELIEVABLY NEEDY for people who are trying to be independent from their parents! Then I get home and my 1 year old is needy, and then she goes to bed and my husband is needy. I would just like to have one hour where my name is not called repeatedly!!

It’s totally understandable that you feel that way! You need a break too!!

Hang in there, I’m always here if you need to vent!

Why do you feel like an asshole? Do you *really* feel like one, or are you just calling yourself one before the internet haters can come in and tell you your problems aren’t real? This is your blog, and I support your right to vent and moan however you please!
Using “other people have it worse” to dismiss someone’s problems really bugs me a lot. Should someone who lost a leg in an accident not be allowed to complain because they could have died in the accident instead? Are *you* not allowed to express frustration when motherhood can sometimes be emotionally draining and physically exhausting? People who always “look on the bright side” are just afraid to express their insecurity; I appreciate your honesty – you have worries just like the rest of us.
Here, have my random internet stranger hug and support. =)

  6. Like this post! These Jello gifs are amazing. And I can relate to everything you said even if I don’t have kids.
And I don’t think you’re an “asshole”. .-)) Just human.
