The Etymologies of Video Game Characters

Ever wonder how Mario and Luigi got their names? Now you can find out thanks to Back of the Cereal Box's aptly-titled piece, It's a Secret to Everybody. My favorite part had to be the Koopalings (Bowser's ill-behaved children) and their similarities to the famous musicians to which they were named after: Iggy, Morton, Lemmy, Ludwig, Roy, Wendy, Larry, and Bowser And after reading the section about Malboro, a recurring monster in the Final Fantasy series, you can't help but wonder if Philip Morris intentionally named their most popular brand of cigarettes "bad breath" (Latin mal meaning “bad,” and boros, allegedly meaning “breath” in Latin or Greek). It's a bit of a long read, but if you have the time (and like me, can...

Go Vote for Amazon’s $199-$229 PS3 Bundles!

I'm a total movie nut and own hundreds and hundreds of DVDs. However, J has forbidden me from buying any more. The problem lies in that we have a fairly large LCD television, 52" to be exact. So while my DVDs looked amazing on my old 27" CRT television, the non-HD is very evident on our new TV, with massive pixelation and loss of detail. We decided long ago that we will buy the best Blu-Ray player out there: the PS3. However, with both money and time being tight, we held off on this luxury purchase (which will eventually require more of our time and money). Until now. Like last year, Amazon will let it customers vote for the ultimate clearance items...

Another Reason My Home Country Rocks

(I wrote a whooping 7 posts last night - 6 public and 1 private - but timed most of them so that they will be published at regular intervals throughout the next day. However, I've discovered that this method does not seem to notify Google Reader. So until I figure out what the problem is, I'll publish each post as they are written. This may result in a barrage of posts in a short period of time so I apologize in advance.) The most connected country in the world + A fascination with PC gaming + Mandatory military service = BADASS BATTLE UNIFORMS!     And yes, as Engadget points out, they bear an uncanny resemblance to Halo uniforms. ...

Guitar Hero World Tour

Guitar Hero World Tour was released today! J and I managed to grab the last GHWT kit from our local Target and rocked out all night. Oh, did I mention that we named our band Faith+1? :-D Due to the rising popularity of the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series, the song selection is a lot better than previous titles. The drum set is solid, the microphone is decent, and the new touch guitar is just...

The Force is Unleashed!

You know that a guy must be really into you if he takes off earlier than usual from work to surprise his boo with a copy of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. (image via Joystiq) And you know he must love you if he lets you play it first! The Force Unleashed was released today! Sure, the XBox demo had been out for a couple of weeks (breaking the XBLM download record) and we had tinkered around with it. However, I restrained myself for the real deal. The Wii version. The one where you can use the wiimote and nunchucks to wield your lightsaber and, obviously, unleash the force! It also didn't hurt that the Wii version has extra scenes that were specifically...
