Fear Itself [Chemistry Kits]

Although I thoroughly suck at science, I received a chemistry kit as a present one birthday some twenty years ago and loved it for years on end. J owned multiple chemistry kits as a child and also has fond memories of mixing strange compounds together and "blowing sh*t up." We fully intend on gifting our children with chemistry sets when they reach the proper maturity level, but I have become discouraged at the types of kits that are available at toy stores these days. No actual chemicals? Nothing sharp or breakable? Glass beakers and test tubes that have been replaced by shatter-proof plastic? Nothing that has the potential to create sizzling/smoking/foul-smelling reactions? Where's the fun in that? That's why I let out a chuckle and a sigh...

Parents Who Invest in Their Children…Literally

Lately it has come to my attention that many parents see their children as a means of retirement. I am not talking about those near (or at) retirement age who have lost their retirement funds due to the bad economy. Rather, I am referring to those who "invest" in their children from the beginning so that the children can support them in their old age. From talking to my friends — especially those of Asian descent — I have found that this phenomenon is more common than I thought. The parents make many sacrifices while pressuring their kids to go to good schools and get good jobs in hopes that one day, the children will realize just how much their parents have...

Sending Christian Kids to Secular Schools

I recently joined an online Christian mommies group and came across a discussion debating the merits of sending your kids to a secular/public school vs a private Christian school or homeschooling. Having attending public schools all my life (well, technically the university I attended is a private institution but it does not have a religious affiliation), I was shocked at how many Christian moms were against public schools. J and I have had many discussions about sending our children to private vs public schools. J has attended private schools all his life (he even attended boarding school in England) and thinks that private schools offer the best education. I see no problem with public schools just as long as the area we're...

Selfishness in Reproduction

I woke up this morning to find a beautifully-written post by my friend Nodakademic that talks about her decision to wait to have kids. What I found particularly interesting was that she, along with others who choose to wait until they are at a more stable place in their lives — and in the meantime, enjoy life without entirely devoting yourself to a helpless being — consider themselves selfish for doing so. What's more, society sees them as being selfish for putting their careers, lifestyles, etc before reproduction. image source The more I thought about it, the more I began to question this sentiment. Because aren't people who choose to have kids selfish too? We live in an overpopulated world that is quickly losing...

Are Posed Infant Photos Creepy?

I'm sure I'll get bashed for saying this, but I always found Anne Geddes photos a bit creepy. I can certainly see the appeal. Babies! In cute poses! With adorable props! What's not to like? However, I always found them distasteful. And from a quick Google search, I have discovered that I am not alone in this viewpoint. I still can't pinpoint the exact reason for my discomfort when looking at these photos. Perhaps a reader can shed some light? At the same time, I certainly have nothing against people who like Anne Geddes' work. After all, beauty — and art — is in the eye of the beholder. Andy and Angela from "The Office" pose Jan's baby for an Anne Geddes-inspired picture Although the Anne...
