Canon vs Nikon [Infographic]

Digital Photography School has sparked another Canon vs Nikon debate by posting the following infographic earlier today: As much as I would've liked to see more technical data, I can only assume that the resulting infographic would be about 5x larger due to the wide range of products each company provides! On a more personal note, when I purchased my DSLR two years ago, I was leaning a bit more to the Nikon side solely based on the fact that my favorite photographers seemed to prefer Nikons over Canons. However, J strongly encouraged me to try them out in person first (my choices at the time were the Canon T1i and the Nikon D90) and once I held each camera in my hands, played around...

Lytro: The Camera That Lets You Shoot Now and Focus Later

In the past couple of days, the tech and photography world has been abuzz with news of Lytro, the focus-free camera that promises to change how you take pictures forever. Lytro is the brainchild of a young Stanford Ph.D named Ren Ng. While the technology has existed since the mid-90s, Dr. Ng was able to take his award-winning dissertation research to adapt the imaging technique — "light field," which once meant some 100 cameras in a room — for consumer use. The basic premise of Lytro's technology is such: the camera captures every ray of light, deflecting off every object at every angle, in any given image. Where traditional camera lenses "simply add up all the light rays and record them as a single amount...

Rosa de Agua

Your eyes aren't deceiving you — the picture below really is a water rose. Photographer Fer Gregory describes how he created the stunning image: To take this picture I made a basic "rose" shape out of a plastic bottle, I taped it to a twig and then I placed them upside down to pour the water over it. The shot is composed of several shots to make it look like there are petals, below are some photos that made this shot along with the set-up. Impressive! I really did think that the image was entirely computer-generated at first glance! Via My Modern Met....

Learn SLR Photography Online with Camerasim

I have owned my DSLR for over a year now, but I still don't feel completely comfortable with its myriad of settings and options. Sure, I have it set to manual mode most of the time, but I'm forever questioning my choices due to the fact that I'm a casual shooter with limited time (and arms). Now, there is a way for people like me — in addition to those who don't know jack about SLR photography, and/or those who don't have access to an SLR — to practice at the convenience of their computers. Camerasim features a pretty nifty online SLR camera simulator that allows you to play around with various camera settings (in addition to environmental settings such as light...

The Development of the Camera [Infographic]

This one is for my photographer friends. Created by Mashable in conjunction with Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom®, it sure makes me nostalgic about the cameras of my past. (Like the Kodak DX3600, which was the first digital camera I ever owned. It was HUGE and boasted a paltry 2.3 megapixels, but I was the first of my friends to own a digital camera and for that, I was proud.) Enjoy! ...
