My idea of a romantic dinner involves debating basketball and football at a four-star restaurant.

I don't know about other girls, but I find it incredibly sexy when a man can spew off sports trivia. And that is exactly what J did during my birthday dinner tonight at my favorite steakhouse. What made it even more special was that after some supreme pwnage, he proceeded to egg me on. The Ever-So-Considerate Hubs:  And THAT's why. BAM! (Emeril style) The Defeated Geek:  I apologize for my ignorance. Please forgive me. The Arrogant Hubs:  Maybe I will, maybe I won't. The Defensive Geek:  Hey! How many other girls do you know recognize, and can tell the difference between the SportsCenter theme music and the Monday Night Football theme? The Reconsidering Hubs:  [pause] I gotta give you that. The Not-So Defeated Geek:  Da-da-daa, da-da-daaa! (to...

Would You Choose Your Spouse or Child?

A New Zealand man was forced to make a terrible choice when his wife and son were trapped in a sinking car. He chose to save his wife, and their 13 year old son drowned. Man had to choose: save wife or son In the months prior to our wedding, J and I attended weekly pre-marital counseling sessions with our pastor. We actually covered this topic one week, and I was surprised to see that there is a Christian answer to this question. Who would you choose if you were in this situation? What would you say the Christian answer is? ...

That Friend

If you've never heard of That Wife, shame on you. That Wife — aka Mrs. Avocado — aka Jenna — is a beautiful person inside and out, a great blogger, a fantastic photographer, and one special friend. When I first announced my pregnancy, Jenna enthusiastically emailed me to let me know that she just recently found out she was pregnant too. Being only a week apart, we kept in touch and dreamed of mommyhood together. A few weeks later, I was able to meet Jenna in person at Christiana (aka Mrs. D'orsay)'s wedding and again at the NYC Bee Party '09. Although we've only met a couple of times and are by no means bosom buddies, I think that Jenna took the news...

The Need to Impress

Six years ago on this exact date, a boy asked a girl if she would like to go check out an all-you-can-eat sushi joint. They had been friends for ages — and best friends for the past few months — so the proposed plan did not seem out of the norm. However, they found that upon calling/texting/IMing mutual friends, no one else was available to join them for dinner. The girl shrugged her shoulders as if to ask "Why not?" and proceeded with the plans. They would have a lovely dinner, just the two of them, as friends. Three hours later it was clear that they were not just friends, as the boy had made "the move" and the girl had readily...

Sacrificing for Family

Last week, I was helping my mother go through some business documents at her store when her friend dropped by to visit. "And what is your daughter doing here?" "She's helping me sort through these documents, make phone calls, write letters, and fill out forms." "What a great daughter!" "Oh it's nothing. She's been doing this for us ever since she was in 2nd grade!" What my mother said is true. When we first immigrated to the U.S., my parents painstakingly studied books, listened to cassette tapes, and even took night classes to learn English. But how could they properly learn while working 80 hours a week in an attempt to set up a new life in a new country (to which they had arrived...
