How I Curb My Sushi Cravings (Gag!)

It’s confession time again, boys and girls!

And the big shocker for the week is: I have eaten sushi with both pregnancies.

😮

When you think about it, pregnant women in Japan must eat sushi every day, no? And after having done my own research on the subject, I do not see how having some raw fish once in a while, from a good, reputable restaurant, can be so detrimental.

As is the mantra for most pregnancy-related issues, I believe that moderation is key.

With this in mind, I have cut down on my sushi intake considerably with both pregnancies. And while I may not have a very adventurous palate, I do enjoy raw tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and uni tremendously.

And whenever I crave sushi more than I know I should, I just think back to this incident from four years ago…

Via Wulffmorgenthaler.

One Saturday, while lounging around the apartment, J and I spotted something white — something that normally isn’t present — in his fishtank. I decided to take a closer look, and discovered that it was a fish skeleton.

Which led us to the only possible conclusion: one of his goldfish had died, and the other one had eaten it.  The fish itself was about 5 inches long, so it was a fairly large skeleton. A fairly large, DETAILED skeleton.

I could barely glance at it; it was that disturbing. Of course, J had to add to that by saying, “He even ate the eyes!”

Then, with perfect timing, the doorbell rang. It was a delivery man, who had arrived with our dinner. And what had we ordered? Sushi.

Oh, the irony.

I usually love sushi and I tried to eat. But after just a few pieces I almost threw up.

Teehee… confession time – I’ve enjoyed sushi with my pregnancy too! 🙂 I think people just say an extreme YES/NO to certain things because when you say “in moderation” it’s too subjective! So I agree that not overdoing it is a good thing and once in awhile from quality places can’t hurt.

I was too worried about judgmental stares so I never WENT to sushi places… my husband would just order take out over the phone and bring it home for us to eat in front of the TV. Yes, even good quality places do take-out!! It was awesome.

And yea… that story would ruin my appetite too!

Why didn’t your hubby notice it earlier? Doesn’t he feed them on a regular basis?

I’ve been terrible: I eat sushi, eat medium steak, and even have an occasional glass of wine through out my pregnancy. My doc says regarding sushi it’s actually fine–you just want to get it from a GOOD sushi restaurant so you know the fish is fresh, not some sushi buffet place 😛

I ate sushi too: my doctor told me it was fine as long as it’s fresh. Actually even alcohol in moderation is supposedly OK. I think people tend to get a little overwrought about diet in pregnancy, so good for you for being relatively relaxed.

I ate sushi with Grayson, too. My thoughts were the same as yours – pregnant women in Japan eat it, so, I should be able to, too. Also, like you, I agree that moderation is key. My doc even told me that towards the end, if I wanted a glass of red wine with dinner to help me sleep, then that was acceptable too. (But since I hadn’t had ANYthing to drink in about 6 months, my limit was like, half a glass.)

This story is a riot!!! Ha, but I feel bad for the poor fish!!! : )
