As Luck Would Have It… [Oh Cruel Fate]

Today was the day I had been eagerly awaiting for months. Because you see, today is the day that I am eligible for a cell phone upgrade!

No more restarting the phone twice a day just to get it to function! No more 30-second lags! And no more cell phone camera that takes blank pictures!

But as luck would have it…

The phone that I want — the Motorola Droid 3 (because I need a physical keyboard) — is on backorder everywhere.  😥

However, the day is not without good news. Because by sheer chance, my current cell phone camera has magically decided to start working again! The focus is a bit off, but it no longer takes blank pictures!

So here are three pictures of Claire I took in celebration:

Didn’t you guys miss seeing recent pictures of her on this blog? 😉

And don’t you love the headband? J and I have been getting sick of everyone mistaking her for a boy — yes, this happens even when she is dressed head to toe in pink, frilly outfits — that we went ahead and purchased a bunch of headbands. Not only does Claire Bear seem to love them (she actually leans her head forward whenever we show her one), she never gets mistaken for a boy when she wears them.

But back to the subject…

This month has been a hellish one for this geek, being without a computer and then having my cell phone crap out on me. As the Droid 3 is supposed to come back in stock in 8-10 days, and because I had been planning on ordering a replacement laptop next week anyway, I might just end up getting a brand new computer and a new phone within just days of each other.

(Just writing that sentence made me feel a bit guilty, like I’m a spoiled, bratty girl. But I figure that since my laptop is almost 3 years old and my cell phone is 2 years old — and because both of them are broken — we can justify the expense. Besides, we are half-considering these my “push presents” from J. :-P)

One more week to go. I can do it!

P.S. — A couple of hours ago I experienced my very first earthquake! (It is the biggest quake to hit the East Coast since 1897  — a 5.9 in VA — and the second biggest of all time after a 7.3 that hit South Carolina in 1886.) Although at the time, I thought it was just BebeDeux causing a ruckus in my belly again. Figures!

How did everyone else react to the earthquake? And did you catch my Tweet about the “DC Earthquake Devastation”? 😀

She gets cuter by the day! I think it’s adorable that she loves the headbands too – a young fashionista!

Don’t sweat the back to back purchases. I’m a total gadget head and find all kinds of ways to mentally justify (what seems like) monthly purchases. Which computer are you getting?

And the earthquake! I was working in a library when the light fixtures and shelves started teeter-tottering and the bibliophile in me thought, “How fitting that I should make my grave amongst these beautiful books”.

    • I’m getting a MacBook Pro — it’ll be my third! (Well technically the first was a PowerBook.) I contemplated getting a Windows laptop, but since all of my software is for the Mac, I figured that I might as well stick with what I’ve been using.

And your earthquake experience? If I were to die, I couldn’t think of a better place to die than in an avalanche of books!

I loved your tweet. I sent along the link to a bunch of people.

very cute pics! I love the headband 🙂

I thought I needed a physical keyboard for my phone but after having lots of trouble finding a good phone that had one, I went with touch-only, and it’s not as bad as I thought it would be. Swype really helps for texting.

And yes, I felt the earthquake! I live just ~30 miles from the epicenter. It was very surreal! Have never felt anything like that in my life. However, my company evacuated for all of maybe 3 minute before going back in and getting back to work, since there was no damage or anything. So I thought your Earthquake Devastation pic (saw it on Google+) was pretty funny 🙂

  4. Yay for your now-working camera phone! 🙂

I must admit, the earthquake freaked out my entire workplace. I work in downtown NYC on the 44th floor of a highrise and was around for 9/11. After feeling the multiple jolts and sways on our floor, we booked it! Is it wrong that I felt relieved when I got a text from a friend who worked further uptown, saying he felt it too? (because then I knew it wasn’t a bomb in my building)

    • I’ve heard that people who were in highrises felt it more than others — you must have been terrified!

And no, it is not wrong that you felt relieved…most people I know got confirmations from Facebook or Twitter!

We have to put headbands on our daughter too! :p

OMG….Claire is so cute!!! I love the headbands. My daughter gets mistaken for a boy all the time – and her ears are pierced.

  7. Kristie says:

Hurray for a new laptop and cell phone. I’ve got 6 months until I can get a new phone, the keyboard on mine keeps sticking and I have to edit every text before I send it or else it looks like I can’t spell.

The pics of Claire are adorable, especially that 3rd one. Love her facial expression 🙂

what a beautiful baby! ;-D I’m totally borrowing her for cute, beauty inspired posts ;-D!

I love my little niece!!! love the headbands. 🙂

I loved that Tweet of the “devastation!”

I get all my daughter’s bow here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/JoyfulJessica

She has very little hair, and these stay put. Plus, she loves them and will insist on picking out her own color (even if it doesn’t match).

Congrats on the new gadgets! My laptop is over 4 years old and is giving me troubles starting up (as in it takes 10 min to do so, and sometimes I have to restart it to actually get it to complete startup). Part of me wants a new one, and part of me doesn’t want to deal with switching stuff over to a new machine.

Plus, it’s the laptop I had in grad school/during my post doc, so those school put on the antivirus software (which is still getting regular updates via their servers), as well as Adobe CS, Office, etc. So if I get a new computer, I won’t have those programs anymore.

Thanks for the Motorola Droid 3 recommendation. I’m a big physical keyboard person too and have been debating which personal phone to get at some point…

Why do people make assumptions about the sex of a child? And also, if they do, why can’t they take in contextual clues like clothing? I swear…
