My Calendar is Marked for Next Wednesday

J and I are not patient people. So when we learned yesterday that we would need to wait 4 more weeks — as opposed to the 2 as we had originally believed — to find out the gender of our baby, we both looked like this:

(I know, I know. I can imagine all the parents out there thinking, “If they can’t wait a measly 2 weeks for this milestone in their child’s life, they have another thing coming when the child is born.”)

So although I had already brought up the idea of a 3D/4D ultrasound to J which he vetoed as a “waste of money for something that looks a bit freaky,” I suggested it once more so that we can find out the sex as early as next week —

— and he agreed!

I immediately set about finding a reputable location nearby and found one in Brooklyn. The best part is that with Mother’s Day coming up, they’re having special promotions and discounts.

Ladies and gents, we will find out the sex of the baby next Wednesday night!

So won’t you please take the poll below and guess what the gender is…?

J is still passionately hoping for a boy. He says that if it’s a girl, he will keep her locked in a cage until she’s 18 and so wants to find out the sex ASAP so that he can start preparing for it (just in case it is a girl).

J’s (very traditional Chinese) parents are crossing their fingers for a boy too, and this was already obvious in the predominantly-blue baby clothes they brought us from Hong Kong.

My mother thinks it’s a girl, but is also hoping for a boy so that things will be “easier” for me with the in-laws. (She too, holds very traditional Asian values.) My father is the complete opposite; he thinks it’s a boy but wants a granddaughter. He says that spending all these years with 3 women — my mother, my sister, and me — has helped him be a better man and a more sensitive person. (Aww!)

As for me? In the first trimester I had strong feelings that it is a boy…but these feelings have subsided in the past few weeks. Right now I really don’t know! And I honestly don’t care. I just want a happy and healthy baby.

Nonetheless I’m still super duper excited to find out the baby’s sex!

Oooh I can imagine how excited you guys must be! 🙂

Personally I would like a girl, because you can dress them up like dolls! lol

My husband wants boys, boys, boys. He says if we have a girl, she will have to go to a convent. And we are NOT Catholic 😛

May I ask what is the baby heart rate when you go in for a check up? If it is above 160 bpm for the heart rate I guess girl and below I would say boy.

So excited for you. I would have sprung for 3D too. We did 3D later on in the pregnancy but found out then that they discount heavily for more than 1 visit in the same pregnancy… if I had known that earlier I would have done it once to find out the gender early and then again later on! Maybe go back at around 30 weeks too when baby has filled out a little more… it’s pretty amazing!

fun fun fun! i’ll make a random guess (i’m never right) but i’m so excited to find out 🙂 i don’t blame you – we paid for an extra ultrasound @ 16 weeks cause we couldn’t wait <3

  6. Jessica says:

I can see why people would think you are silly for getting the extra expensive ultrasound, but I know I would want it too!

  7. Ashley says:

Yay! I voted boy, just because. Did you check the Chinese calendar? Mine said boy and so did half of my husband’s family, and they were right.

Regardless, I’m excited for you guys!

i’m from a small town, so going elsewhere for an ultrasound is a little odd for me to comprehend. but with your resources, i’m excited for you!! what does your OB think about you getting this ultrasound? did you ask or tell him?

  9. Cyndi says:

I guessed girl b/c next Wed will be our daughters birthday!

Just something to think about from a double board certified imaging specialist….Many of these nonmedical imaging centers do not have board certified technologists performing the test…Just be cautious! Hope you get the find out the sex next weekt! I was fortunate enough to be friends with the u/s techs at my work so i found out early too!

My ILs and my parents were hoping girl from day one…. Jin REALLY wanted a boy..BUT now he is thrilled with having a daughter ;0)

@Bridget — We haven’t asked our OB, but we assume that it’s fine because they have signs for a nearby 3D/4D ultrasound imaging center right there in their office. The place that we’re going to will make a copy of all our files and send them to our OB office after the ultrasound, so everyone will be informed.

@Cyndi — Yay I’m so excited for you guys! And don’t worry, I made sure that the place we’re going to has board-certified technicians performing the ultrasound….Brooklyn’s a bit far for us but we chose this place for that reason, in addition to the great reviews I found online.
