U.S. Cities According to Twitter

Did you know that 66% of Twitter users don’t list an actual location on their profile? And while I assume that most seem to do this for privacy reasons, there is also the fun factor (such as “Justin Bieber’s Heart”).

InboxQ has sifted through various geotagged tweets in order to bring us a map of the United States if it were left up to the Twitterverse. Many of the city nicknames seem appropriate, but some have be scratching my head in confusion. I had to google “Whale’s Vagina” to discover that it is a term coined by the movie Anchorman (because “San Diago” means exactly that).

Do you reveal your actual location in Twitter? If not, what do you use instead?

I’ve lived in two of these places and neither of the nicknames make much sense. I mean, I see where they come from, but no one calls Phoenix “Bird City” (I think that is from a rap) and I’ve never heard Colorado Springs referred to as “Little London,” though it’s apparently a historical nickname. It’s interesting that all these nicknames exist on twitter.

I’m surprised by the Whale’s Vagina thing. When that movie came out, it felt like EVERYONE was quoting that. You’re lucky you got through 2004 and the following years without ever hearing it.

  2. How cool! I love infographics (is that what they’re called?) like these. I reveal my location, but since I write about NYC, it’s pretty obvious 🙂
