A Sheepish Hello

I think that may have been the longest time I've gone AWOL since starting this blog. I could spew excuses about being sick before my trip to LA, not having a reliable source of internet while in LA, then getting sick again right after my return. However, I know that I would not be honest to myself or my readers. Because the fact of the matter is, you can always find the time or energy to blog. You can always find inspiration. You can always stay true to yourself and your writing. So I apologize once again. I am sorry, my dear readers and friends, without whom this blog would be nothing. What has been keeping me busy since my departure? Well, remember that project...

Different Ways to Facilitate the Same Idea

I had a mild epiphany at my birthday party Saturday night. J and a friend were discussing the possibility of a new start-up venture, when I noticed something interesting about the conversation. Our friend, who works in finance, approached the situation from a “How can I make money from this?” point-of-view. J’s first instinct was to dissect the situation and find all the possible cons and pitfalls. He would design test-cases where everything that can possibly go wrong would go wrong…and he would try to find ways to fix those “bugs,” or at least find methods to circumvent the problems. After all, he is a software test engineer by trade. By this time, my cousin had joined in on the conversation. She, who is...

The Best Salesman in the World

The last time I was in San Francisco, I ran into the world-famous Bushman as many other tourists do at Fisherman's Wharf. After getting the crap scared out of me, I had a little chat with him, and even asked, "Do you make enough money doing this?" "Hell yeah, I sent two kids through college doing this." (image source) Now I have no idea if this claim is true or fale, but his Wikipedia page indicates that he makes up to $60,000 a year - well above the U.S. average annual income. I was reminded of the Bushman as I read a blog post titled The Best Salesman in the World at Get Rich Slowly. Joe Ades, dubbed "the gentleman grafter," may possibly be the best salesman in the...

Confessions of a Former Best Buy Employee

The Consumerist is currently deep into the 2008 Worst Company in America contest, with 16 companies left in the round 3 bracket. They just posted the third installment of its "Sweet 16" matchup: Best Buy vs Diebold. Personally, I think Diebold is worse than Best Buy. Not only due to the voting machine fiasco, but to the fact that I've dealt with them many times in my prior job and I've found that the company couldn't be more poorly run. That being said, Best Buy is pretty terrible too. I should know, because I worked there. My tenure at Best Buy was short, from 2000-2001, and things may have changed since then. (But from reading comments on sites such as the Consumerist, things do...

5 Pieces of Advice for Recent Graduates, Part 5

Part 1: The world doesn't owe you anything. Part 2: It's never too late. Part 3: Make the best of it. Part 4: Be ballsy. 5. Sometimes, it really is pure luck. When I first started job-hunting, I didn't have much going for me. My grades weren't good, I had little experience, and I had no clue what I wanted to do for a living. I sent out my resume to hundreds of companies and never heard a peep. Soon, the bank of mom and dad threatened to cut me off. "Get a job or move back home." I decided to try temping while still job-hunting, just so I can prove to the parents units that I wasn't lying on the couch watching TV all day. I contacted a temp agency, and...
