Fashion Designers Imagine Katniss’s Fire Dress [Hunger Games Pr0n]

InStyle magazine has recently asked some of its favorite designers to sketch their visions of Katniss Everdeen’s fire dress from the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy. If you can recall, the dress represents Katniss’s transition from an outdoorsy tomboy to a powerful, kickass woman, and her appearance in the firy gown is when the people of Panem begin to take notice of this underdog.

And just in case you don’t quite remember what the dress is supposed to look like:

I am dressed in what will either be the most sensational or the deadliest costume in the opening ceremonies. I’m in a simple black unitard that covers me from ankle to neck. Shiny leather boots lace up to my knees. But it’s the fluttering cape made of streams of orange, yellow, and red and the matching headpiece that define this costume. Cinna plans to light them on fire just before our chariot rolls into the streets.

Take a look at each interpretation of the dress below — which one is your favorite?

Christian Siriano:

Tommy Hilfiger:

Rachel Roy:

Tadashi Shoji:

Charlotte Ronson:

Nicole Miller:

Christian Cota:

Tibi:

Erin Fetherston:

The Blonds:

BCBGeneration:

Charlotte Ronson’s interpretation of the dress seems to stay truest to the book (and I love that Rachel Roy included Katniss’s Mockingjay pin!), but I think I like Nicole Miller’s sketch the best for its mix of toughness and frivolity.

For descriptions of each sketch, check out the online gallery at InStyle.com.

Some of the designers didn’t even come close to the description 🙁

One of my pet peeves is when people do cover art or sketches based on a book and what they draw is so completely WRONG based on the book. It’s very annoying

Ok, I’ll start by saying I don’t understand “art” so some of these designers really made me mad by doing their own thing instead of going with what was described in the book. Call me a traditionalist. I’m guessing the ones who made the sketches that don’t make sense didn’t read the book or even a synopsis. There is no way she would be carrying her bow and arrows while she was in this costume, that was supposed to stay under wraps until she was in the game.

My absolute favorite is Charlotte Ronson (minus the bow and arrows) because the model looks like a young girl and the costume is spot on. Christian Siriano came in a close second for that amazing looking cape. Nicole Miller was up there, as well.

I have to agree with Jill…I think that the designers should stick to something that’s at least CLOSE to what is in the book. In particular, Tommy Hilfiger’s design has me scratching my head. I like the colors in Tadashi Shoji’s design, and it’s a beautiful gown but it’s just wrong for Katniss.

Awesome post for a Monday morning! I love Charlotte Ronson’s and Nicole Miller’s designs. Can’t wait to see how it actually turns out in the movie. I get these magical images in my head when I’m reading a book and they do not always stand up to reality when I see them on screen.

I think Rachel Roy and The Blonds captured the essence of Katniss. I’m curious as to what Sarah Burton of McQueen could create.

  6. Charlotte Ronson’s is my have…

Stumbled upon your blog… Great reads =)

i was ooo-ing and ahhh-ing until i got to tibi’s design. i laughed so hard at it’s solemn emo-ness that i spat on screen. hahahaha

Not knowing anything about the book but being a fan of art, i really liked Rachel Roys design. In contrast i also liked the BCBGeneration one which i liked for it’s subtlety.

….hmmm i need to get back to sketching again 🙂
