Holiday Movie Marathon

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas —

And the Geek in Heels household has officially commenced its holiday movie marathon.  😀

Although many movies remain perennial favorites (see: It’s a Wonderful Life), I prefer the neo-classics from the 1990s to the early 2000s. My top five favorite holiday movies, in no particular order, are:

Love, Actually

The Holiday

This movie didn’t look that interesting in previews and I’m not much for rom-coms (despite the fact that this list may indicate otherwise). However, J and I caught it one night while flipping through channels and we ended up falling in love with it. It’s quirky, sweet, fun, and real. I don’t think it did that well in the box office, but I highly recommend it!

Bad Santa

This film seems like it was a hit-or-miss among my peers (e.g., I love it while J hates it). I like it because it’s dark and witty, funny and sarcastic, and portrays a unique perspective on the holiday spirit. I also love that it emphasizes the importance of relationships — no matter how seemingly strange — without being corny about it.

Die Hard

Yippee-ki-yay, motherf*cker.

While You Were Sleeping

Another movie I believe did not get the reception it deserved. This is actually my favorite Sandra Bullock movie (and I remember that my sister used to have the biggest crush on Bill Pullman when this movie came out!). And while I’m not too into cutesy-wootsey, feel-good movies, the holiday season leaves me in a more optimistic and agreeable mood. 😮 It’s such a cute movie that I can’t leave it off this list.

Love love love Love Actually! Just last night I said to my fiance that I hadn’t watched it yet this holiday season and today seems like a perfect day to pop it in!

  2. When Harry Met Sally is a great watch for just after Christmas in that week before the new year.

I’m glad someone else appreciates While You We’re Sleeping as much I do! (And I was in agreement with your sister too!!)

We watch Nightmare Before Xmas while we decorate. “Making christmas, la la laaaaa.”

I too had a massive girlhood crush on Bill Pullman from that movie! Haha I feel less alone now! : ) Merry christmas buddy!

Yay for While You Were Sleeping! I didn’t think anyone fully appreciated that movie either, I used to watch it a LOT. We don’t movie marathon, though, because we end up spending too much time visiting with people now. I’m rather grateful, honestly, because I’m fully over the around-the-clock viewings of the same movie. 🙂

Okay, now I HAVE to leave a comment. On top of being the mother of two little boys 13 months apart (7 and 20 months), Korean with the last name Hwang (maiden name) born in 1980, somewhat pessimistic (realistic?) and geekish, married to a non-Korean, a Marylander (in your case, an ex-Marylander), and many other similarities, I LOVE ‘While You Were Sleeping’ too! It induces that warm and fuzzy holiday feeling in me whenever I watch it. I came across your blog today while doing some research on Korean play mats, and I said “What?! Huh!” out loud in disbelief when I learned about Claire and Aerin being 13 months apart. Consider me fascinated!
