“Sookie…”

I know we’re only two episodes in, but I’m loving the new season of True Blood so far.

As someone who owns, and has read all the Southern Vampire Mysteries books, I can confidently say that the HBO series is significantly better than the books. There are, of course, some digressions and cast choices with which I disagree. (How exasperating was the Maryann plotline last season? Nevermind the piss-poor choice of casting Evan Rachel Wood as Sophie Anne.) But as a whole, the series is a typical Alan Ball hit: dark yet humorous, unexpected, and quite addicting.

While the first season of the television show was almost exactly like the first book, I was glad to see that the show started deviating from the books last season and left the fans guessing. And if last night’s episode was any indication of things to come, we will have an action-packed third season that will combine elements from several of the books.

To finish my short accolade to my favorite summer television series, I’ve decided to share with you my favorite 12 seconds from yesterday’s episode:

I think I can listen to Bill saying “Sookie…” over and over again. And Anna Paquin does a terrific job of reproducing that drawl — don’t you agree?

Are any of my readers a fan of True Blood? What do you think of the new season?

I loved that part! She was so cute saying that. Also when her brother told Andy he was his best friend and Andy said "how sad."

I’ve read the Southern Vampire Mysteries, and while I admit the writing isn’t great… I’m not a fan of how much they’ve deviated from the book. Though admittedly, my opinion of Bill is probably viewed through the lens of the book. I dislike Jason’s plot line too.

The latest book just seemed like a placeholder for the next book, I was so disappointed! How did you feel about it?

@Christiana — I didn’t like the last two books for the exact reason you have stated. But as much as I didn’t like the Maryann plotline, I like most of the deviations so far…especially that of Jessica’s!

  4. OH do I love me some True Blood!! It’s funny, it’s scary, it’s drama-filled and a bit porny. LOVES it. Jessica is an awesome character; I haven’t read the book so I can’t speak to that. Eric? Yum.

I don’t think True Blood is better, per se, I just think it is different. The books are just Sookie’s story so True Blood has to be a lot different so all the secondary characters can actually have bigger storylines. I am glad they are diverging more this season because I am a little tired of knowing what will happen. This is more exciting!

I just wish the last few books could be more like the earlier ones. There don’t seem to be big mysteries or story arcs, they are just bridges to the next book.

I cracked up when Sookie did that. It was like comic relief during an otherwise pretty dramatic show.

I’m loving this season, except I’m SO over Tara and her mental issues. I was sort of hoping she’d die off LOL. I feel bad for Lafayette though..poor guy.

My friends introduced me to True Blood, this exact episode, last night! I am liking it. Didn’t know it was based on books, so I guess I have more summer reading material ahead of me!

I laughed so hard when she said that! I love True Blood, book and show alike!

& the Maryann plot was so drawn out, I was ready for her to die waaaay before the last episode.
