The Gender Guessing Game

It is no secret that I would prefer BebeDeux to be a boy. If so we’d have one of each and we’d be done!

Be that as it may, I wouldn’t be upset if BebeDeux turns out to be a girl. After all, dontcha know that two girls are the best? 😉

We were excited to find out Claire’s gender when I was pregnant with her and it is no different with this baby. But I will most likely have to wait until my Level 2 Ultrasound to find out — a whole six more weeks! — and I will be the first to admit that I’m already growing impatient.

That’s why I decided to turn to early gender determination tests.

These aren’t old wives’ tales. These are actual studies done with statistical data whose majority results back up the theories.

First up is The Nub Theory which looks to “the angle of the dangle” at 12-14 weeks to guesstimate the sex of the baby. The Nub Theory only seems to correctly predict the gender a little better than 50% of the time, but that still counts as the majority in my book.  😛

You can go check out this gender prediction forum for more information about The Nub Theory. And here’s what Baby2see has to say about it:

Male gender

With the male fetus, the genital tubercle usually creates an angle of greater than 30° with the lower part of the spine.

Female gender

In the female fetuses, the genital tubercle protrudes in the same direction as the lower portion of the spine with an angle of less than 30° relative to the backbone.

Unfortunately, in our case, BebeDeux’s bottom region was not viewable in the 12-week ultrasound pictures we received. I checked to see if The Nub Theory was correct with Claire, but her bottom wasn’t viewable in her ultrasound pictures either. Boo.  😡

Thankfully, the next gender prediction test — The Ramzi Method — is a far more accurate in early gender determination. According to The Ramzi Method, fetuses that implant on the right side of the uterus tend to be boys, while those that implant on the left side tend to be girls.

How accurate is The Ramzi Method? Well, according to this study, it is 97% accurate.

Excitedly, I took a look at Claire’s early ultrasound pictures again. I was a bit disappointed to see that she was positioned on the right side, which disproved The Ramzi Method in our case.

…But hold on there. I then read that while transvaginal ultrasounds portray the correct positioning, abdominal ultrasounds — which were the ones I had been looking at with Claire — display the mirror image of what’s really going on inside.

Which meant that The Ramzi Method was correct for Claire!

I then took a look at BebeDeux’s ultrasounds…

And there was no doubt about it. BebeDeux is positioned on the right side of my uterus. Which means I am carrying a little boy.

Will The Ramzi Method once again prove accurate for this pregnancy? Only time will tell…

I am a dullard, how can you tell on your u/s which side they implanted on? I want to check P’s old one!

    • It’s quite simple — just look at the ultrasound and look to see which side the fetus is on in relation to the rest of the black blob that is your uterus. That being said, I’ve read that some ultrasound pictures make it look like the fetus is on the top or bottom (it all depends on how the doctor or the tech did it) and that makes it more difficult on those cases.

How intriguing! 🙂 A little boy would be sweet though!

I love all the detective work that you’ve done. I’m totally going to book mark this post for reference for when I’m pregnant in the future.

Ooh – Ramzi would have been right for my last pregnancy – it was a boy and I carried him on the right side… 🙂

  5. Ooh can’t wait to see if the Ramzi method proves true for baby 2!

What were you having in the end?

The Ramzi method is only meant to be from ultrasounds done between 6-8 weeks, as the placenta can move around so might not be in the same place for the dating scan.

Just came across this- checked my 7 week ultrasounds with both my daughter and son- and this method was correct!!! I am now pregnant with number three and have an ultrasound in a couple of days- so curious now!!!

I’m trying to figure this out and I’m confused about abdominal vs transvaginal images.
Mine was abdominal and when I look at pic baby is on left. Does that mean its really on left or on right?

Coming from a father (yes, I look at the blogs in anticipation for my newborn) guessing the gender is really something that I have used to get involved. It’s not exactly easy to get my guy friends to jump on the baby wagon, so I set up a betting pool similar to how we make sports pools and had people place bets on the baby. Winner takes all. Worked well, got everyone involved. I used an bellybets.com because it was better for me to email a link than collect the bets by hand, but my friend also just got a chart circling at work – same thing.

THE LEFT OF THE IMAGE/SCREEN SHOWS THE PATIENT’S RIGHT FOR BOTH TRANSVAGINAL & ABDOMINAL

Transvaginal ultrasounds and abdominal ultrasounds do NOT differ in their perspectives.

For BOTH, the view on the image/screen is from the perspective of the sonographer.

*** This means that the left of the image of the image/screen is the patient’s right, while the right of the image of the image/screen is the patient’s left. ***

This applies to transverse ultrasounds (which is the typical type of scan at 6 weeks).
(Sagittal ultrasounds show neither left nor right).

    Please refer to http://www.mainehealth.org/em_body.cfm?id=4733

Technically, the sonographer can flip the image, so ask if it’s a true transverse if you would like to be sure.

OTHER NOTES ON THE RAMZI METHOD

It’s about whether the placenta is starting to form (not where the fetus is). You can take a guess from your ultrasound pic, but the only way to KNOW where it’s forming is to have an ultrasound that shows the blood flow (which is what Ramzi used).

If the placenta is forming on the right (which will be left on the image/screen), then it indicates a boy.

If the placenta is forming on the left (which will be right on the image/screen), then it indicates a girl.

THANK YOU. PLEASE SPREAD THE WORD! 🙂

*Please excuse me if I’m reviving an old post. I’m trying to kill the false internet rumour by responding to posts which appear high up on relevant Google searches.

Greeting to all of you…please note that it is not the baby position we look for. It is the placenta position to the sides not placenta height from cervix but the placenta sidedness is more to the right or more to the left side ? and that MUST be done in true transverse section, when you see the ultrasound picture the right side of the picture to you is the mother left side, and the left side of the picture to you is the mother right side. in trans abdominal scan, dont look at the position of the baby. and if you have trans vaginal scan it is the same reverse if the scan was done in pie shape where the widest angle is in the bottom, and if the technologist flip the image and make the widest part of the pie in the upper scan it is not mirror image any more. so please read the research carefully and enjoy , please remember that it is not the gender that important but it is your health and the health of the baby and the gender is just a bonus.
