Homework: A Family Effort?

Claire should technically still be in preschool. However, because she missed her school's cutoff age by only a couple of months — and because she's a bit advanced for her age — her teachers recommended she start pre-kindergarten early. (As such, she will always be one of the youngest kids in her grade.) And one of the things that distinguishes preschool from pre-k is the inclusion of homework. I was shocked when they handed us her first assignment at pickup. Really? Homework for 4-5 year olds? (At the time, Claire was only 3.) I don't remember getting homework until the 2nd grade! They also included a sheet of instructions in her homework folder which included things like: Establish a scheduled time and quiet place for homework to...

Things David Fincher Doesn’t Do [Brilliant!]

This video has been popping up on my favorite blogs since last week, but I haven't had a chance to watch it until now. And it's excellent. One can't help but be utterly impressed with David Fincher afterwards. I don't think the average movie goer notices the things that Tony Zhou points out in the video, even when watching the same flick multiple times. (At least I don't. Do you?) But once you see it, you can't ignore its brilliance. I mean, who knew so much thought and planning goes into each shot, angle, and perspective to get the desired story, mood, and message across to the viewers? So if you have an extra 7 minutes today, I highly suggest you take a look at...

A Comprehensive Chronology Chart of Disney Movies

Ever wonder where exactly in known history (or future) your favorite Disney movie takes place? Or how they compare chronologically to other Disney films? Now, you can, with this handy chart from Disney's New Groove. Aish, the creator of the timeline, explains: Disney movies in order of historical setting. (Excludes most of the package films. Some films, eg The Lion King, are impossible to pin down exactly and some, like Aladdin and Treasure Planet, are anachronistic, so these are estimations. A few have been split into 2 if there is more than one time period in the movie, and sequels have been put together.) Via Geeks Are Sexy. ...

Fascinating Ways in Which ‘Based on a True Story’ Movies Differ from Real Life

I think most of us are smart enough to know that Hollywood takes a lot of liberties in making its films more marketable to audiences. Even if a movie is “based on a true story,” it can be safe to assume that many changes were made to the original narrative in order to make it more likable, entertaining, and relatable.

Still, I was shocked to read some of the actualities revealed in 24 Movies Based On a True Story (That Are Full of Shit). I’ve picked 10 of my favorites below — did you know about these?

Why You Should Love ‘Orphan Black’ [Infographic]

***spoilers below*** Because it's the best sci-fi show currently on TV. Because Tatiana Maslany is an amazing actress — hello, Emmy snub! — who plays about a dozen different characters (in case you didn't know, Orphan Black is a show about clones) with such ferocity that you could swear the show employs identical twins. Or triplets. Or quadruplets. Or even their own clones. Because you'll fall in love with everyone, and you'll have endless internal debates about which clone is your favorite. (Mine is Allison at the moment.) DAT DANCE PARTY. Because you can binge-watch seasons 1 and 2 — each 10 episodes long — and you'll be caught right up. And you'll finish the latest episode with a "NO!" (well, that happens pretty often with this show ;-)...

Pop Songs as Sonnets

(Sorry for the lack of updates this past week. We are officially in the 2-week period between summer camp and the start of school, and I’ve expectedly been really busy with the girls. Add to that little Aerin wanting to copy everything that her big sister does — including not taking naps — and I feel like September can’t come soon enough!)

Pop Sonnets is a Tumblr blog that turns pop songs into Shakespearean sonnets. Needless to say, it’s full of delightful bits of brilliance. 🙂  Here are some of my favorites:

The Giving Groot

Have you guys seen Guardians of the Galaxy yet? I was able to catch a showing opening weekend, and although I liked it a lot (I've loved Chris Pratt ever since he first stepped foot on the Parks and Recreation set), I didn't believe it was as fantastic as most people made it out to be.  :-|   I thought Winter Soldier was a better movie, TBH. And the best movie I've seen this year so far? The Grand Budapest Hotel. (And I have heard wonderful things about Boyhood...

The Science of Star Wars

Physicist Andy Howell recently gave a talk about the science of Star Wars — yes, the actual science behind, the inspiration for, the data that supports, and the 'how's and 'why's behind the wonders of the SW world! — and wrote up a summary for Ain't It Cool. This is so nerdy that I couldn't help but stay up 'til 2am, devouring the details.  8-)   The topics include: Space Fantasy Droids Tattoine Holograms Parsecs Lightsabers TIE Fighters Training Remotes The Death Star The Destruction of Alderaan For example, did you know that training remotes (the floating robotic orb Luke uses to practice his lightsaber skills) are a reality? And that they're flying on a spaceship right now???!!!!! In 1999, MIT professor David Miller showed his students STAR WARS, and when it got to the part about the training remotes,...
